Dairy Farms

I got off to a little bit of a late start today. There was fairly widespread fog this morning. It wasn't as bad as it was in Bismarck, North Dakota, but it was enough to delay my ride start until after 10am. Luckily, I didn't have a huge day planned..."just" 77 miles or so from Shawano to Potter. And after a number of fall-like days with cooler temps and overcast skies and some precipitation, today was more seasonal with temperatures in the 70s and mostly clear, sunny skies.

I ended up with slightly more mileage than my estimate. I finished with 78.75 miles. I think the little bit of extra was due to a construction detour. There were pouring fresh oil or tar at one intersection I was supposed to ride through. I didn't want to gunk up my tires, so I opted to backtrack a short distance to ride an alternate route.

I did encounter two more construction "closures" later in the day. For the first one, I chose to stay on-route and I was able to navigate through the construction by walking my bike around one intersection. Easy. For the second one, my route turned away from the construction before I actually got there, so it was a non-issue.

Other than the construction issues, the only other pictures I took today were of dairy farms.
A typical dairy barn near Shawano. The dairy cows are housed in covered barns. They usually have large ventilation fans and open sides, at least during the warmer months.

The veal pens look like large dog houses. The calves don't have a ton of room, but they are able to move around some with both inside and outside options.

If you wondered where your butter comes from, it comes from here. This was a Land O Lakes Member Owner dairy farm near Potter.

Tomorrow is a rest day in Green Bay. We thought about trying to go to the Thursday night game last night, but the logistics were just too much of a hurdle after riding nearly 92 miles. Driving to Green Bay, finding parking, buying game tickets, and then driving an hour back to our lodging after the game was a bit too daunting.
