I don't have a lot to write about today. I logged my sixth consecutive 80+ mile day, riding from Holdingford to Springvale today. It was another fall-like day with cool temps in the 50s, a stiff breeze at times, and the threat of rain that delivered the real deal this evening...after I was inside at our lodging. I also finished off the 100+ miles of rails-to-trails recreational trail and had to get back to riding roads.
The next two days will be rest days. Lailla and I want to check out Minneapolis a bit and so I'm taking an extra rest day so we don't feel so rushed. I may or may not post something each of the next two days. If I don't post, it's not because any mishaps have befallen me; rather, it'll just be a brief break from blogging in addition to a break from riding.
A 7.5-mile warm-up on the Soo Line Trail (also known as the Lake Wobegon Spur Trail) started my day. At the town of Bowlus, I had to jump back onto regular roads.
In Bowlus, the directional sign listed a bunch of the towns that I've ridden through over the past three days. I started riding on recreational trails in Fergus Falls the day before yesterday. Note the distance to Bowlus: the circumference of the Earth (or close enough).
I crossed the Mississippi River today. It was bigger than I thought it would be.
I've seen quite a few wild turkeys during this adventure, but they're hard to get a picture of. As soon as you stop and pay any attention to them, they rush off into the trees or brush. I finally managed to get a picture of these three. They're just to the right of that closest tree.
I took a chance and rode out to the construction area to see if I could get through. There was no bridge and there was no way across, so I backtracked and followed the detour signs. That only added 3.6 miles of unnecessary mileage to today's total.
Sssshhhh! Don't tell Captain Jack Sparrow.
Finally, this was the first evidence that we may be getting into Amish areas a little more.
I think I took a different route in picking Craig up from his destination. I did see an Amish man driving a horse and buggy down the county road in the opposite direction. I decided the 60mph speed limit was too much. I didn’t want to come around a corner and be surprised by one on in front of me, so I’ll be taking the county roads much slower from here.
ReplyDeleteAs a fellow cyclist, you have to love Rails-to-Trails. A good organization to support for all cyclists out there.
