Return to Farmlands

I rode out of the Northwoods today and back to the Farmlands. I started the morning in Crandon and rode into Shawano this afternoon for a 91.3 mile day. Everything up to the town of Lily was still Northwoods. After that, it fairly quickly turned to Farmlands with lots more cornfields, but also a fair smattering of dairy farms. I didn't take very many pictures today, but there are a few interesting ones. Today was another long-ish day: I completed 91.3 miles.

I haven't seen many sheep on this journey. This small flock looked very well cared for.

Not far after the sheep, I saw this group of four draft horses. They were at a farm that advertised sleigh rides, so I'm sure they're working horses.

The town of Mattoon had a nice mural painted on a retaining wall at the edge of the main road through town.

In the town of Bowler, there was an old pay phone booth in front the Urban Telephone Co. building. (Bowler has a sign at the town boundary indicating the population is 309...hardly "urban.") I also found a baby snapping turtle in the street. I had no qualms about picking up this little guy and he didn't try to bite me.

I also took a couple pictures of big red barns. Big red barns are very common here. The top one was associated with a dairy farm. The second was on an unknown type of farm.

Tomorrow, I won't make it to Manitowoc, but I'll get close. That's where we'll catch the ferry across Lake Michigan. But before taking the ferry, I'm going to take another rest day, this time in Green Bay. We'll take the ferry on Sunday.
