Revised post Sept. 2, 2025: Added the picture of Peter and I.
This post might be a little longer than usual. It seemed like a very full day with a lot going on. And I took quite a few pictures as well. So let's get to it!
I've also been seeing signs similar to this at the edge of some crop fields for a few days:
Are these different seed varieties that are planted there? I didn't notice any significant difference in the plants behind each sign. I'm not sure what else they could be. Does anybody know for certain? If I get a chance, I may try to research it on the internet.
We also met Kim at Brewhalla. She was heading home to Portland, Maine, today. She'll be following this blog and we may see her again when I get to Portland in about five weeks:
On the way back to the hotel after yesterday's ride, I saw a roadside sign that said "Continental Divide - Elevation 1460 Ft." Huh? Then I realized it was probably a continental divide between the Gulf of Mexico watershed (i.e. the Mississippi River and it's tributaries, including the Missouri River) and something further north. After looking it up, I was generally correct. The Northern Divide (also known as the Laurentian Divide) determines whether water flows south and east to the Gulf of Mexico or north and east to Hudson Bay.
The Laurentian Divide at two different places. It's not anything that's really noticable as you're driving or riding along.
Then I crossed the Sheyenne River. In Colorado, there are many things named Cheyenne. I assumed the North Dakota "Sheyenne" was just an alternate spelling of "Cheyenne." It is. By the way, Sheyenne River water ultimately flows to Hudson Bay.
In the town of Enderlin, I came across this road sign just before riding past a baseball field. By the time you see the foul ball heading for your windshield, there's probably not a lot you can do about it. Slam on the breaks, throw it in Reverse, and hit the gas? Or leave it in Drive and hit the gas to speed underneath it? Neither seem like feasible solutions.

I met another cross-country cyclist at the convenience store in Kindred, ND. I was debating whether to stop or not when I saw a bikepacker bike parked outside. That clinched it for me: I stopped. Inside, I met Peter Sousounis from Boston, Massachusetts. He started in La Push, Washington, and he's riding home to Boston. We chatted for awhile and exchanged contact information and blog addresses.
When I rolled into Fargo this afternoon, I planned to cycle to our hotel. On the way there, I passed this house with interesting sculptures in the yard and on the house:
I don't know the story about this place, but I thought it was kind of cool.
We're staying at the Brewhalla tonight. It's a combination market, brewery, and hotel. They have quite the selection of beers with some pretty funky names and graphics for each one. Kelly was our server today and she was happy to show off the beer selections:
Finally, I have some bad news. I lost my wallet today. I carry a biking "wallet" which is really just a plastic sleeve that I keep four items in: my driver's license, my health insurance card, and two credit cards. Usually I have a little bit of cash in there to buy snacks or drinks at a convenience store. I realized it was missing when I tried to buy a Coke while chatting with Peter in Kindred. Lailla and I drove my entire route this evening and we couldn't spot it along the road. I called the North Dakota non-emergency dispatch center and asked them about it too. No joy, but they now have an alert in their system should it turn up. I have a couple more ideas that I'll follow up on in the morning.
It was so fun having you visit Brewhalla! I hope to see you again, and I’m excited to follow your journey! - Kelly 🤓
ReplyDeleteBecause I had lost my wallet, Lailla asked Kelly to card me when I came in. Kelly played it very well. She offered me juice or ice water. I tried to show her my ID on my phone and she said it had to be the actual ID, not a picture. I was pointing to all my grey hair. She wasn't having it until Lailla finally said, "Let him have a beer." They got me good. Well played both of you.
DeleteBrewhalla sounds great!
