Welcome to Vermont
As I mentioned yesterday, the Ticonderoga Ferry that I was planning to take across the river from New York to Vermont has ceased operations for this year. So I took the Lake Champlain Bridge to Vermont instead. Getting there took most of the morning. First, I had to ride nearly to Ticonderoga.
The descent out of the Adirondack toward Ticonderoga was a beautiful view and a fast and fun descent.
After I turned north toward the Bridge, I encountered another very old cemetery, the Streetroad Cemetery.
The Lake Champlain Bridge from two different perspectives.
Before leaving New York, I took a picture of their nice Welcome sign since the one I took in Niagara Falls was somewhat distant from where I was riding. On the Vermont side, there was no welcome sign; instead, there were just a number of directional and highway signs. Come on, Vermont, you can do better.
An old canoe is now a flower planter in Crown Point, Vermont.
I happened to see another Lover's Lane. (I saw the first one in Wisconsin on September 10th.)
This business had a huge Halloween display on the lawn in front of the store. I particularly like the group of skeletons doing yoga.
My day up to Middlebury had been an up-and-down hilly day. But from Middlebury to Rochester, I had an actual mountain pass to climb. It was the first real mountain pass since Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park, Montana.
On the way up the pass, I went through the small village of Ripton, where somebody still had a toll road sign in their yard.
At the top of the pass, I crossed Long Trail, a famous hiking trail.
Just before my destination of Rochester, I encountered a nice pastoral scene of cows munching on lush grass and I realized that I haven't included very many (maybe one?) cow pictures in my blog post. I've seen cows in every state and province that I've ridden through.
Finally, after Lailla picked me up in Rochester, we had to drive to our lodging in Randolph. Google Maps routed us on a dirt road over a small mountain. It was beautiful and Lailla snapped this picture of our evening drive.
I rode 78.6 miles today and logged 5384 feet of climbing. Tomorrow's route promises more mountain passes.
